Two children, aged 9 and 6, live in Dorset and learn about the upcoming Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Despite being told they can't attend, they decide to make their own way to London to see the Queen, using their uncle's connection to the Household Cavalry. They face various misadventures, get separated, and eventually reunite with the help of kind adults. After sleeping out, they're allowed to watch the procession with a policeman, but Julie falls asleep at the crucial moment. A second chance brings them to the railings of Buckingham Palace, where the Queen appears on the balcony, fulfilling Julie's dream.
