In the small town of Cat Tail, Florida, two migrant farm workers, Danny and Steve, find themselves at odds over their working conditions. While Danny is employed by Madden Packing, Steve works for the struggling farmer Nick. When Madden's Tomato crop is ruined, Steve sees an opportunity to make a profit by taking Nick's new crop to Atlanta, where it sells for a high price. As tensions rise, Danny views Steve as foolish for working the land, while Steve's decision leads to a chain of events that sets off a series of conflicts in Cat Tail.
