In 1918, a small Ukrainian unit of 400 soldiers, mostly students, defends a railroad station against a much larger Bolshevik army of 4,000 men led by General Muravyov, who seeks to capture Kyiv. The unequal forces engage in a fierce battle, with the young soldiers fighting valiantly and sacrificing themselves in a desperate struggle against the invaders.
