Small-town newspaper publisher Sam Preston abandons his well-settled family for a decade, only to return and find his newspaper shut down and his family gone. He embarks on a journey to find them, eventually stumbling upon his youngest daughter Mary James, and is reunited with his family, including his estranged wife Ellen, who has moved on with her life and another man. Despite their complicated past, Ellen allows Sam to stay with them, but only if he agrees to work as a housekeeper, setting off a chain of small-town gossip and drama.
