In ancient China, Mandarin Wu, a strict authoritarian, raises his daughter Nang Ping to adhere to the country's ancient laws. Despite being a doting father, Wu arranges for Nang Ping to marry a man of his choice, a stranger to her. However, Nang Ping falls in love with a British visitor, Basil Gregory, and becomes pregnant with his child. When Wu discovers his daughter's secret, he is driven by the ancient laws to pursue a tragic course of action.
