A small group of experienced infantry soldiers clash with Soviet forces, while Ludwig Herckel, a devoted and patriotic soldier, wanders the woods in a daze after an explosion knocks him unconscious. He meets a fellow soldier from his hometown in Germany, who is now stationed on the western front, where they witness the decline of the army group, the loss of comrades, and numerous war crimes committed by both sides.
