Captain Cyrus Harding, a prisoner of war, escapes with a group of companions in an enemy balloon during the Civil War. After drifting in space for days, they crash-land on a desert island, where they find themselves battling native islanders, pirates, and a visitor from Mercury named Rulu, who seeks to destroy the world with a radio-active material.
