A young boy, separated from his carpenter father in Kudan, follows Tashiro to his Tokyo tenement, where the boy's father had arrived from Chigasaki that morning. Despite Tashiro's willingness to help, the tenement's head, Tamekichi, refuses to let the boy stay. The boy is instead passed on to their neighbor, Tane, a widowed woman who is initially reluctant to care for him.
