As the Civil War looms, Fort Laramie faces a different threat: the Sioux Indians. When war is declared, the fort's inhabitants are split between northerners and southerners, leading to a crisis of loyalty. The commander and his southern supporters resign and set out for the South, but their journey takes them through treacherous Sioux territory, where they are soon ambushed. A desperate messenger returns to the fort with dire news, leaving the new northern commander to make a fateful decision.
