In the small Polish town of Malava, the people have long thrived on horse-related activities. However, when a Russian garrison, led by Captain Stoloff, occupies the town, it disrupts their way of life. The Russian-Japanese War requires the requisition of all horses, leaving the townspeople without their livelihood. As a result, Kifke cannot marry Estusha and the young men are at risk of being drafted into the Russian army. Zavill decides to take matters into his own hands.
Romance of a Horsethief
In 1905, as the Russo-Japanese war breaks out, a group of Polish horse thieves face extinction when the Russian army confiscates their horses, leaving them without a means of survival. The men are then forcibly conscripted, leaving the women and children to struggle for survival.
