Trudi Hovland, a teacher from snowy Minnesota, is recruited by publicist Jimmy Sutton for a leading role in a Hollywood film, based on the best-selling novel "Girl of the North". After previously coming in 436th place in a competition, Trudi is now considered the top choice for the part. Despite his growing feelings for her, Jimmy manipulates a romance between Trudi and up-and-coming star Roger Maxwell, who needs to boost his image.
