A young Russian teacher, Irene Roma, is given an amulet by her wounded brother, which attracts the attention of a discredited Russian secret agent. To leave Shanghai, Irene turns to her friends, Howard Barclay and Johnny McGinty, and proposes a marriage of convenience to secure an American passport. The amulet is hidden in a mandarin figure, but they're pursued by the Sargoza gang, and eventually escape to a Japanese merchant ship, where they face a new challenge from Fuji Yokahama.
