Two Portuguese Catholic priests, Sebastião Rodrigues and Francisco Garupe, travel to Japan in 1633 to investigate the disappearance of their mentor, Father Cristovão Ferreira. They arrive to find a land of brutal anti-Christian purges, where they witness the suffering of those who believe differently. As they try to locate Ferreira, they are faced with the ultimate test of faith: renounce their beliefs or watch as innocent people are tortured and killed.
