Dr. Michael Burgess, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, teaches at a college in Sayeville, NC, and is preoccupied with fencing, caring for his delusional mother, and navigating a relationship with literature professor Gretchen Carlsen. When a Hollywood movie crew descends on the town to film his novel, "Sweet Liberty", Michael is proud of its historical accuracy and accessibility. However, he becomes disheartened when he discovers the script deviates significantly from his book and lacks historical accuracy.
