Alfredo Martelli, an antiquarian, is taken to a police station without warning and interrogated by Inspector Palumbo. Martelli soon discovers that his wealthy mistress, Adalgisa De Matteis, has been murdered and he's the prime suspect. As he reflects on his time in jail, Martelli recalls fond memories of his life with Adalgisa and his passionate affair with Nicoletta Nogaro.
