The movie tells the true story of Baroness Platon Von Wrangel, the opera-singer daughter of August Merckens, who married a Russian leader in a bid to revive the Russian monarchy.

In this romantic drama, a charismatic American dancer traveling through Russia during the tumultuous years before the Bolshevik Revolution finds himself captivated by a young army officer. The feeling is mutual, but their love is threatened by the officer's powerful father, the Grand Duke of Russia, who has his own desires for the woman. Despite being already married, the Grand Duke refuses to let his son marry his intended, setting off a chain of complicated events.
