In the late 1970s, 18-year-old Michael Romano's high school hijinks land him in trouble, putting his college plans on hold. His father, a manufacturing executive, takes him to work and pairs him with Jake Cutter, the grizzled purchasing manager who has dealt with the horrors of World War II through his drinking, womanizing, and intense work ethic. Despite initial hostility, Michael and Jake develop a strong bond as they navigate the chaos of daily production and the changing American manufacturing landscape over the course of a summer.
