After her ship is attacked by a German U-boat, a young American woman finds refuge in her family's ancestral home in France, only to confront the harsh reality of the German occupation.

As war erupts, Karl and Jules, both enamored with Angela, are torn apart by conflicting loyalties. When she flees to France, Karl's brutality is almost unleashed upon her, but the arrival of German forces intervenes. Later, Angela is imprisoned for her secret correspondence with Jules, but Karl's intervention saves her from execution.
