The movie is based on Amos Oz's novel "Panther in the Basement" and takes place in Palestine in 1947. Proffy, an 11-year-old militant, wants the British to leave his land. He plots with friends to terrorize or blow them up, but one evening, he's caught by British Sergeant Dunlop. Instead of arresting him, Dunlop drops him off home, and a friendship develops between the two foes. Proffy sees Dunlop as a father figure, while Dunlop is lonely and poetic. Their secret meetings shape Proffy's life, especially the shock of feeling affection for the enemy.
