On a cold January day in 2006, a gruesome discovery is made in the Swedish town of Hudiksvall, where 18 people are brutally murdered overnight. Judge Birgitta Roslin learns that her grandparents are among the victims and discovers that almost all of the victims have a connection to her. She becomes convinced that the police are barking up the wrong tree and begins her own investigation, leading her to uncover a sinister plot by China's elite.
