King William III, a Protestant Dutchman, faces opposition from Scottish clans after acquiring the English, Scottish, and Irish crowns. The clans debate whether to accept William as their new king or remain loyal to ousted Catholic King James II, who lives in French exile. After considering their military weakness and James' inability to raise an army, the clan chiefs decide to support William, but only if exiled King James gives his blessing. William, however, is wary of the Scots and their Catholicism, and gives the clans a deadline to swear allegiance or face war.
