In 16th century Venice, a merchant's financial struggles lead to a catastrophic chain of events, ultimately resulting in a merciless and violent ultimatum from a Jewish moneylender.
In 1596, Bassanio asks Antonio for a large sum to travel to Belmont and propose to Portia. Antonio, who has invested all his money in his ships, borrows from the Jewish usurer Shylock, despite the city's intolerance towards his people.
