Two boys, one a prince and the other a pauper, are born on the same day. As children, they cross paths in the palace garden, and in a moment of mischief, they swap clothes. However, their fun is short-lived, as the guards catch them and mistakenly throw out the prince, who is almost indistinguishable from the pauper. The boys' attempts to clear up the confusion fall on deaf ears. Later, the king passes away, and the prince is next in line for the throne. But the power-hungry Earl of Hertford plots to eliminate the prince and claim the throne for himself.
