Tony Warren, a former child actor, submits TV scripts to Canadian producer Harry Elton, who wants to support local talent. Warren wants to produce a drama about real Northerners, inspired by a picture of Prince Florizel, but Granada studio boss Sidney Bernstein is skeptical. However, his brother Cecil sees potential in cheaply made studio dramas with local actors, and the show is commissioned for 13 episodes. The character of Ena Sharples proves difficult to cast until Tony brings in Violet Carson, a cantankerous old actress.
