Letty Mason, an innocent and naive young woman, leaves her Virginia home to live on a ranch in Sweet Water with her cousin Beverly and his family. However, she soon discovers that the harsh environment, including the constant wind, is not the only challenge she faces. The unrefined way of life in Sweet Water and the suspicion of her cousin Cora, who believes Letty is trying to steal her husband, make it difficult for Letty to adjust. With no money, Letty is forced to accept a marriage proposal from Lige Hightower, their neighbor, whom she doesn't love. Despite their rocky start, Letty begins to develop feelings for Lige, who wants to do right by her and promises to send her back to Virginia when he can afford it. However, their happiness is threatened when a stranger takes refuge in their home, seeking refuge from the wind.
