Nigel Slater, a nine-year-old boy, lives with his mother in Wolverhampton in 1967. Despite his mother's poor cooking skills, Nigel has a passion for cooking. When his mother passes away from asthma, Nigel is left with a distant father and a new cleaner, Mrs. Joan Potter, who becomes his stepmother.
