Vampira: The Movie background

Vampira: The Movie

The documentary explores the remarkable life and enduring impact of Maila Nurmi, the creative genius behind the iconic horror host Vampira.

Maila Nurmi, the first horror host, gained fame in 1954 as Vampira, the "glamour ghoul" who introduced obscure horror movies on television. She became friends with Hollywood stars like Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Anthony Perkins. Although her show was canceled, Nurmi appeared as Vampira again in the 1956 film "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Her character was revived in Tim Burton's 1993 film "Ed Wood", starring Johnny Depp, which led to a cult following similar to that of Bettie Page.
