In 1913, Axel Heyst, a mysterious loner, resides on a secluded island near Surabaya. His life is disrupted when he encounters the racist hotel owner, Schomberg, in the Dutch East Indies port. Schomberg has acquired Alma, a talented musician, from the all-woman orchestra, and Heyst is asked to rescue her from her new owner. They escape to Heyst's island, where they live with his native servant, Wang. However, their peaceful existence is threatened when Schomberg's sinister accomplices, led by Mr. Jones, arrive on the island, seeking a fortune.
