A former carnival owner, haunted by his criminal past, starts a new life with his fiancée Helen, but his dark history soon resurfaces, landing him a 20-year prison sentence for manslaughter.

Buck Rankin, a former carnival owner, marries Helen and attempts to leave his criminal past behind. However, after a fight, he is sentenced to 20 years in prison for manslaughter. When Helen vows to wait for him, Rankin forges a letter claiming he drowned while trying to escape. Twenty years later, Rankin is released and changes his name to Duke Sheldon, becoming a nightclub owner with mob ties.
