An aging cowboy takes a job on a vast cattle ranch, tasked with keeping trespassers off the property. He discovers a family, a woman and her young son, who have taken over the cabin reserved for him. Feeling sympathetic, he agrees to share the cabin until spring, and as the winter sets in, the trio forms an unlikely bond. As they grow closer, they develop deep feelings for each other, and the man finds a sense of family he never knew he wanted. However, their refuge is soon disrupted by a violent family of "rawhiders" who force the cowboy to defend his newfound family.
