US Army war veteran Hazel Motes, a non-believing Christian, is inspired to become a traveling preacher after a chance encounter with a cab driver who thinks he looks the part. He founds his own Church of Truth, minus Jesus, with a young and naive disciple who claims to possess a prophetic gift.
