A young American hockey player, Matthew, falls in love with a French-Canadian coed, Gabrielle, while studying in Canada on a scholarship. After losing his scholarship, Matthew is faced with returning to the US and risking the draft. He decides to enlist in the army and goes to Vietnam, where he becomes a hero but is severely injured, losing both legs. Matthew lies to Gabrielle, telling her he's died, to spare her the burden of caring for him. Gabrielle gives birth to their child and travels to the US to show Matthew's mother and grandfather their grandchild. However, she discovers Matthew is alive and in a wheelchair at a veteran's hospital.
