Laurie, a journalist, faints at Varney's execution and is reassigned to the Prudence Maddox column. Meanwhile, Mitch is transferred to Prudence after writing a story about Greer murdering Crowder, which he can't prove. Mitch's success makes Prudence a lucrative part of the paper, but he can only regain his editor position by exposing Greer's corruption.

Laurie is mistakenly declared dead and is transferred to the Bewildered Heart Column of Prudence after publishing a story about his execution, unaware of Varney's last-minute pardon.
