The film tells the story of Jesse and Frank James, whose father is wrongly executed by Union soldiers and their mother is severely injured when their home is bombed by Union forces. Seeking revenge, the brothers join Quantrill's Raiders, Cole Younger, and Belle Starr. As they ride together, Jesse and Frank frequently clash, and Jesse eventually marries Zerelda 'Zee' Mimms.
