Nina, a young chambermaid, starts working at Rome's Imperial Hotel, where she's inspired by her cousin Valentina to experience a better life. She takes care of Contessa Lucretia Sanziani, a 72-year-old woman who's estranged from her husband and struggling financially. The Contessa, a former "love goddess" of Europe, sees herself in Nina and advises her to be true to herself, predicting that people will notice. As the Contessa's grip on reality begins to slip, she helps Nina transform into a polished version of herself, and in the process, the world takes notice of Nina's new persona.
