Abbas Mahadjir, a French teacher, and his family flee from the Central African Republic to France after their wife and mother, Madeleine, is killed by a militia. Abbas haunts Madeleine's memory in his dreams and works at a fruit and flowers market, where he meets his girlfriend Carole. His brother Etienne, a literature teacher, lives in a shack and works multiple jobs, ashamed to reveal his living situation to his girlfriend Martine.
