Evelyn Dow, a dying woman, is tormented by the disappearance of her child as a child. Her husband, Henry, tries to make her final days more comfortable by hiring a waitress, Sally Gates, to pretend to be their daughter. Sally takes on the role, but Mrs. Dow's renewed joy and health make it difficult for Sally to escape her new identity.
