In this movie, a 32-year-old Vietnam veteran, Ken Talley, returns home to Lebanon, Missouri, on Independence Day 1977, seven years after losing both legs in the war. Despite his physical limitations, Ken is strong-willed and good-looking, but his cynicism has taken a toll. He is joined by his partner, Jed, a gentle and powerful gardener who is also a good listener. As they reunite with their friends and former lovers, they must confront their complicated pasts and relationships, both before and after Vietnam, in order to determine their future together.
