In the northern Chinese city of Manzhouli, a mythical elephant sits, ignoring the world, and becomes an obsession for a group of troubled individuals seeking escape from their downward spirals. The story follows a schoolboy on the run, a classmate who has fallen for her teacher, a brother haunted by a friend's suicide, and a pensioner whose son wants to institutionalize him, among others, as their fates intertwine on a suspenseful day from dawn to dusk, culminating in the departure of the train to Manzhouli.
