A period piece set in a Brazil that no longer exists, 29 years after the events of "God and the Devil in the Land of the Sun". The story follows Antonio das Mortes, a former Cangaceiro killer, who is drawn back into action when a new Cangaceiro, Coirana, appears. Initially, Antonio sees Coirana as a threat, but as he learns more about the idealist leader and his followers, he begins to question his own motivations and feelings towards them.
