In 1879, Captain Jeff Stanton leads a cavalry unit to return the Mescaleros Apaches to their reservation, after they left and attacked settlers and gold miners. He captures Red Hawk, the chief's son, to negotiate a truce, promising to keep outsiders off their land. However, some greedy townsfolk and gold miners plot to break the truce, murder the Indian agent, and blame the Apaches. This leads to Colonel Perry replacing Stanton, who intends to use force to subdue the Apaches, resulting in disastrous consequences.
