Bayo background

Bayo

In a charming coastal town in Newfoundland, a mother and her young son are struggling to break free from a cycle of tradition and make a better life for themselves.

Sharon and her 10-year-old son Bayo live in Tickle Cove, Newfoundland, where generations of their family have resided. Sharon longs to escape her mundane life and move to Toronto for a better future. She leaves a packed trunk in the foyer as a symbol of her impending departure. Her fisherman father, Phillip, only provides enough money for Sharon to survive, not to achieve her dream. Bayo, however, wants to stay by the sea, just like his deceased father and grandfather. He fantasizes about rowing across the Atlantic to Portugal. When Phillip returns, Bayo begs him not to give Sharon the money to leave, which sets off a chain of events that will affect their lives.
