In a desperate search for work, a poor church mouse named Amos finds refuge in Ben Franklin's run-down print shop. With his ideas, Amos helps Ben create the Franklin stove, bifocal lenses, and the Pennsylvania Gazette, saving Ben from financial ruin. As Ben's fortunes rise, Amos remains hidden, guiding Ben's creative process. However, when Amos is struck by lightning, he disappears. Ben is forced to beg Amos to return, and after some negotiation, Amos agrees to come back, but only if Ben signs a contract. Just as they're about to finalize the agreement, Thomas Jefferson drops by to seek Ben's help with the Declaration of Independence, and the contract's wording is unwittingly used to inspire the iconic document's opening words.
