Donald Barlow searches for his father, a Canadian serviceman from World War 2, after his mother's death. He hires a search agency, but when they find his father, Gordon Devereaux, the elderly man denies any involvement with Donald's mother. Donald's journalist daughter, Claire, takes her son to Canada to meet Devereaux, and a unique friendship develops between the old man and the boy. However, when the boy reveals secrets about Devereaux's family, the old man discovers the connection and a conflict ensues between Claire and Devereaux.
