A struggling screenwriter, Charlie Baxter, finds inspiration to write his magnum opus after moving into a mysterious mansion, where he discovers a doctor conducting bizarre experiments. As he learns more about the doctor and the other residents, Baxter suffers a heart attack, but awakens cured at a terrible cost. The doctor, a strangely preserved woman named Shockner, forces Baxter to stay and reveals her dark past. As Baxter delves deeper into the sinister world, he must find a way to stop the evil that lurks above the stairs.
