Set against the picturesque backdrop of rural Ireland in the 1930s, the story revolves around five sisters who, despite being unmarried, discover happiness and fortitude in the tranquility of their everyday lives.

In 1930s Ireland, a young boy narrates his childhood growing up with his unmarried mother and four spinster aunts. The five women, each with distinct personalities, form a strong emotional support system, with the eldest taking on a maternal role. Their lives are disrupted by the arrival of their elderly brother, a priest struggling with senility, and the boy's father, who returns on a motorcycle to announce his departure to fight in the Spanish Civil War.
