The film tells the story of the USS John Paul Jones, from its construction to a perilous battle with a Japanese submarine. Among the crew is Steve Boleslavski, a former shipyard welder who re-enlisted as Chief Boatswain's Mate. After struggling through sea trials, the destroyer is assigned to a mail run, but its journey takes a dramatic turn when it encounters the enemy sub. With the ship on the verge of sinking, the crew and captain devise a plan to save their vessel and destroy the submarine.
