Arnie Haines, a rock 'n' roll star, and his band decide to take a break from touring and visit their hometown Mellondale. However, they're met with resistance from the mayor, who bans them from playing in the town, fearing they'll corrupt the youth. Meanwhile, Arlene MacLaine, a renowned columnist, is brought to Mellondale by her daughter Francine, who's trying to convince her mother to appreciate rock 'n' roll. Despite this, Arlene writes a scathing column denouncing Arnie and the genre.
