Danny O'Keefe, a band leader and singer, is drafted into the U.S. Army along with his orchestra members, leaving behind his vocalist, Gloria Gold. He writes letters to Gloria, which are answered by her secretary. In Ireland, Danny is stationed with his friends and demands a donkey cart driver, Molly Callahan, leave. The Callahans retaliate by beating up every American soldier who looks at an Irish woman. Danny's sergeant orders him to resolve the issue with Molly and the Callahans, which he does by singing Irish ballads. Molly falls in love with Danny, but Gloria arrives as part of a U.S.O tour, complicating the situation.
