East Palace, West Palace background

East Palace, West Palace

China's government previously considered the LGBTQ+ community criminal, refusing to grant same-sex couples legal recognition and rights, forcing them to engage in secretive and high-risk sexual activities.

The film tells the story of a young gay writer, A-Lan, who is arrested by a young policeman and uses the opportunity to share his life story, revealing the widespread repression of the Chinese society. As the policeman listens, his initial revulsion gives way to fascination and ultimately, attraction.
